How to Clean Sofas and Upholstery at Home

Your sofa is used every day, so it collects dust, crumbs and stains. A regular routine keeps it looking new for longer.

Step 1: Check the care label

Look for the cleaning code on the sofa or cushions. It tells you whether to use water, solvent or professional cleaning only.

Step 2: Vacuum thoroughly

Use an upholstery brush or attachment to lift dust and crumbs from the surface and the gaps between cushions. Do this weekly.

Step 3: Treat stains quickly

Blot, never rub, fresh spills with a clean cloth. Test any cleaner on a hidden spot first.

Step 4: Freshen up

Sprinkle a little baking soda, leave for 20-30 minutes and vacuum it away to reduce odours.

Step 5: Dry well

Allow the fabric to dry fully in a ventilated room to prevent mould and smell, especially in monsoon.
